There was a time when every club on the planet would have jumped at the chance to sign Kylian Mbappe if they had the opportunity.
For Arsenal fans in particular, there has always been a mystique around the Frenchman, which has led some of the extremely optimistic sections of the fanbase to think ‘What if we signed him?’ Perhaps it’s the fact Mbappe is still the closest thing the world has produced to a Thierry Henry regen since the King of Highbury hung up his boots in 2014.
The two Frenchmen bear a number of similarities, including being born in Paris’ suburbs, lightning pace, trickery with the ball, winning the World Cup early in their careers, and carrying an unmistakable aura on the pitch.
Mbappe grew up in Bondy idolising the Arsenal hero, having admitted to watching “everything Henry did.” What was even more fascinating to Gunners supporters everywhere was the viral photo of a young Mbappe wearing Arsenal’s 2003/04 yellow jersey, with Henry’s name and No.14 on the back.
He was closer than many realise to becoming an Arsenal player too in the summer of 2016. Then-manager Arsene Wenger famously visited his home in France while he was still at Monaco in an attempt to convince him to move to N5 off the back of a 26-goal breakout season.
