“I want more grocery stores,” he said.
Claire blinked. “That is either very sweet or a sign of neurological trouble.”
“I’m serious.”
“I was afraid of that.”
He set down the tomato.
“I don’t know how many years I have,” he said. “No one does, but I know it louder than you do. I don’t want to spend them proving anything to strangers. I don’t want a wedding that answers critics. I don’t want to be forgiven for my entire past by becoming your husband. I just want the ordinary life we keep finding in between all the difficult parts.”
Claire stared at him.
A teenage employee misted lettuce nearby.
Julian reached into his jacket and pulled out a ring box.
Claire laughed. “You brought a ring to the grocery store?”
“I’ve been carrying it for six weeks.”
“That explains why you kept patting your pocket during dinner with Marcy.”
“I thought I was subtle.”

He opened the box.
The ring was not large. An antique sapphire, deep blue, imperfect.
“No spectacle,” Julian said. “No argument. No deadline. Just a question.”

“Yes,” she said.

They married in Eleanor’s backyard by the ocean.

“I’m glad you’re here,” she said.
Miles swallowed. “You look happy.”
“I am.”
