Her Injuries Were Posted On FB! Aubrey’s Nurse Mother & Boyfriend Arrested For Her Murder!

Part 1: The Belated Indictment and the Perfect Facade

Arrests have finally been made in connection with the suspicious death of a 5-year-old girl. The child passed away in June in Greenup County, and half a year later, the Kentucky State Police announced that two suspects—the girl’s mother and the mother’s boyfriend—had been taken into custody on murder charges. The indictments for both individuals are worded identically: they committed murder by engaging in conduct that created a grave risk of death to another person, thereby causing the death of a 5-year-old child due to multiple blunt force injuries. The pair was taken into custody at their residence without incident. This case is incredibly heartbreaking for the victim’s family and devastating for the perpetrators’ families; so many lives have been deeply affected.

Wurtland, Kentucky, is a small town bordering Ohio, situated on the southern banks of the Ohio River. This is where Rachel Waddell, a single mom, and her four children lived what appeared to be a perfectly normal life in a modest home. Rachel graduated from nursing school in 2012 and was employed as an ER nurse at St. Mary’s Medical Center across the river in Ironton, Ohio. Rachel was previously married to Michael Dean Stowers, the father of all four of her children. It remains unclear when they divorced or what their child custody arrangement looked like, but judging by Rachel’s Facebook profile, she was the primary caregiver.

When scrolling through Rachel’s Facebook page—which we all know is essentially a curated digital stage where people only display who they want the world to see—she seemed to be a normal, loving mother to her children prior to meeting Clay. In her earlier posts, her kids looked well-dressed, clean, and happy. Under one old post, a comment from what appears to be Rachel’s sister or a close relative recalled the day her youngest daughter, Aubrey, was born, framing her as a true blessing to the family. So, how on earth did Rachel end up burying her 5-year-old daughter and standing before a judge charged with murder? Upon a closer look at her profile, subtle but horrifying changes began to appear in her daily posts, specifically regarding the condition of little Aubrey. Something had gone terribly wrong.

Part 2: Blue-Eyed Angel Aubrey and Her Cold-Blooded Boyfriend

Aubrey Marie Stowers was a beautiful, blue-eyed angel born on April 18, 2018, in Portsmouth, Ohio. Her eyes were bursting with life, and her smile could warm anyone’s heart. She loved riding her bike, dancing to music, and was never shy around strangers. She would walk right up to you, start a conversation, and tell you she loved you before leaving. Aubrey looked up to her older brother and sisters, and they loved their baby sister immensely. However, her absolute best friend was her Bulldog, Diesel. She loved to cuddle with him and found immense comfort in his presence. I am glad Aubrey had Diesel; I hope that for at least brief moments, she felt safe when he was near. Tragically, she was looking forward to starting kindergarten in the fall, but those little dreams were violently ripped away on June 17, 2023.

Rachel’s first Facebook post featuring her new partner, Christopher “Clay” Stiltner, was on December 24, 2021. While the news articles refer to him as Christopher, his Facebook profile goes by Clay. Digging deeper into Clay’s background, he has a daughter who appears to be around the same age as Rachel’s oldest child. Most of his posts consisted of crass memes and crude jokes that were highly offensive to women, revealing a very toxic personality.

Interestingly, Clay had absolutely no pictures of him and Rachel anywhere on his Facebook page, and he never liked or commented on any of the couple photos Rachel posted. For any woman who has dated, a partner completely hiding the relationship on social media while remaining highly active is a massive red flag. Clay’s last post before the tragedy was dated June 15, 2023, just two days before Aubrey’s death. Following that, he went completely silent until November 2023. Nearly four months after the child’s death, did he post a tribute to Aubrey or offer condolences to Rachel’s grieving family? No. Instead, he posted entirely about himself, claiming he was “praying a lot, staying strong,” and that his head was the “clearest it’s been in a while.” What exactly were you praying for, Clay? Praying that law enforcement wouldn’t discover what you did? A week later, he posted another selfish update: “I know medicine works and God is an amazing source, but my little buddy (his dog) has been a rock the size of a glacier for me…” He complained about his own struggles and leaning on a pet for comfort, completely ignoring the fact that he and his girlfriend had slowly brutalized Aubrey to death—the very child whose only comfort in that house of horrors was her own dog, Diesel.

A comment found under one of Rachel’s posts from a long-time acquaintance confirmed these dark suspicions:

“I’ve known Rachel many years and I can honestly say I never thought she could do this. And I also know Clay and many details and stories about him, and honestly, this didn’t surprise me at all. I just wish someone would have gotten her away from him before he turned her into this monster.”

Part 3: Evidence of Abuse Publicly Posted on Social Media

Even as Rachel tried to project the image of a happy family, the photos she publicly uploaded told a cryptic and horrifying story of the violence Aubrey was subjected to.

Back in 2019, Aubrey appeared completely healthy. However, once Rachel intertwined her life with Clay, she began sharing photos with unusual frequency. Several theories emerge: either Rachel was trapped in a highly controlling relationship where her partner demanded she blast him all over social media, or her life was in complete shambles after Clay’s mask came off and posting these photos displaying Aubrey’s suspect injuries was a silent cry for help. Alternatively, there could be a deeply sadistic element where she derived some sick pleasure from posting them. Regardless of the motive, the fact that she was indicted on the exact same charges as Clay indicates she actively participated in or enabled the torture of her daughter over an extended period.

A careful examination of these public photos reveals shocking details:

  • Binding Marks and Bruising: In one photo, distinct dark bruising is visible in the creases of Aubrey’s arms and around her wrists, strongly resembling marks left from being tied up or bound.

  • Facial Lacerations: Another photo shows Aubrey with stitches over her eye. While children do get hurt accidentally, the sheer volume of injuries appearing consistently across her body completely rules out normal childhood mishaps.

  • The Use of Sunglasses: Aubrey is seen wearing sunglasses in numerous photos, even indoors or while posing for pictures with Clay. This was clearly a tactic used to conceal black eyes and facial bruising.

  • Nasal and Labial Trauma: In a photo taken with her dog Diesel, her nose shows severe scraping with what clearly looks like dried blood crusted inside her nostril. Her lips appear extremely chapped and dehydrated, with suspicious markings around her mouth.

  • Extensive Bruising: Red arrows on multiple photos point to severe, widespread bruising across her legs, arms, and along her hairline on her forehead, where significant swelling is visible.

  • The Haunting Christmas Photo: In the most twisted display of cruelty, Rachel had Aubrey pose and smile for Christmas and New Year’s photos while the poor child clearly sported a healing black eye and horrific bruising all over her legs.

Part 4: CPS Failures and a Brother’s Cry for Help

How did all of these blatant, visible injuries on little Aubrey go unnoticed for so long? The comments left on Rachel’s Facebook page expose shocking details that are bound to surface at trial.

While many comments express absolute fury that nobody reported the abuse, text trail evidence suggests that the children themselves tried to get help. Two separate individuals confirmed that Rachel’s oldest son tried to tell people what was happening to Aubrey. One comment stated: “He reported that mommy and her boyfriend beat his sister then go shopping.” It is impossible to fathom the immense psychological burden and helplessness those siblings carried. Living in a tiny, three-bedroom, one-bathroom house measuring just under 1,200 square feet, there is no way the other children did not hear or witness their baby sister being brutally abused. They must have been absolutely terrified.

Worse yet, sources indicate that Child Protective Services (CPS) had actually been involved, but Rachel consistently managed to fly under the radar due to her professional status: She was an ER nurse. As a medical professional, she was legally classified as a mandated reporter. One woman commented that her husband had been treated in the ER where Rachel worked, and the staff was fully aware she had an open case with CPS, yet the hospital allowed her to keep working. The case raises serious questions about whether CPS gave Rachel special treatment or dropped the ball because of her nursing background.

Furthermore, Clay Stiltner already had a prior conviction for the abuse of a minor. Rachel, as a mother and a nurse, completely failed to perform basic due diligence before bringing a monster around her children. Sociological studies show alarming statistics: children living in homes with an unrelated adult are 40 to 50 times more likely to die from inflicted injuries or suffer severe physical abuse than those living with two biological parents.

Even more sickeningly, after Aubrey passed away, Rachel reportedly told people that the 5-year-old had simply collapsed for unknown reasons and heavily implied that her own son had something to do with it in a desperate attempt to defend herself. On her profile, she had the audacity to post hypocritical statements like: “One of the most underrated ingredients for having a good life is a clear conscience… lets you sleep peaceful at night” and “As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the mind, soul, heart, and body of our patients…” These words are profoundly twisted when contrasted with the reality of how she treated her own flesh and blood.

Part 5: The Arraignment and Court Proceedings

At the preliminary arraignment held in Greenup Circuit Court before Circuit Judge Brian McLoud, Rachel Waddell (36) and Christopher “Clay” Stiltner (38) appeared in jail jumpsuits. In stark contrast to the cozy photos they once shared, the two co-defendants sat on opposite sides of the courtroom, displaying entirely different emotions. Clay, dressed in a bright orange jumpsuit, sat completely idle, aloof, and stared straight ahead throughout the proceedings. Rachel, on the other hand, appeared highly anxious and emotional, staring down at her shackled feet, fidgeting with her hands, and quietly sobbing.

Defense attorney Sebastian Joy officially stepped in to represent both Stiltner and Waddell. Joy waived the formal reading of the indictments before the near-capacity courtroom, and a plea of not guilty was entered on behalf of both defendants. Attorney Joy requested the court to consider a $50,000 bond for Rachel, citing her lack of prior criminal history, and a $100,000 bond for Clay, pitching the argument that Aubrey’s death “was not an intentional act.”

However, after reviewing the comprehensive reports from the medical examiner and the coroner, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Joe Merkel immediately pushed back. Prosecutor Merkel brought up Stiltner’s prior conviction involving the abuse of a minor victim and emphasized the extreme severity of the murder charges stemming from long-term physical abuse.

Judge McLoud handed down his ruling:

  • Bond was set at $200,000 cash or property for each defendant.

  • A pre-trial conference was scheduled. If convicted by a jury, the couple faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Beautiful little Aubrey’s broken body finally gave out after one final, brutal beating, and it tragically took her death for the world to finally listen when it was already too late. Justice must be served, and these two monsters deserve to never see the light of day again.
