During my lunch break, I rushed home to prepare food for my sick wife. As soon as I entered the house, I was horrified and my face fell when I saw what was in the bathroom.

Anushka’s   lips   trembled   as   she   tried   to   speak,   her   eyes   wide   with   shock,   while   Raju   stepped back   awkwardly, raising both hands as if surrendering to a situation  none   of us expected.

For   several   seconds,  neither   of   us   moved,   the   only   sound   filling   the   bathroom   being   the   steady   flow   of water from the shower and the violent beating of my heart in my chest.

My   mind   was racing   , but my body was paralyzed, and I stared at them   both   , unable to decide whether to scream, cry, or simply walk away.

”  Bhaiya,   listen first,  please   ,” Raju said nervously, his voice trembling, looking at me with a mixture of fear and despair, clearly aware of what the scene must have looked like.

But   my   eyes   remained   fixed   on   Anushka,   who was  still   leaning   against   the   wall   ,   her   face   pale   and   exhausted   ,   her   breathing   heavy   as   if   standing   required considerable   effort  .

”  What   is it   ?   ”  I   finally   managed   to   say   ,   my   voice   low   and   cold,   the   words   coming out   slowly as confusion and anger waged an internal battle.

Anushka   closed   her   eyes   for a   moment   before speaking, as if to gather the little strength she had left,   while   the water continued to flow beside us like an indifferent witness.

”  I…   I   slipped   in   the   bathroom,”   she   murmured   weakly, pressing her hand against her forehead as if simply explaining was almost impossible for her tired body.

Raju   nodded   quickly,   took a step   forward   but   stopped   halfway   when he   noticed   my tense posture and the suspicion   that   still clearly burned in my eyes.

”  I   heard   a   loud   crash   coming   from the   hallway,”   he   said   hurriedly, “and when I knocked, my sister-in-law didn’t answer, so I pushed the door open and saw her lying on the floor.”

For   a   moment,  I   remained   silent,   the   image   of   betrayal   that   had   invaded   my   mind   a few   seconds   before   refusing   to   disappear   so   easily.

The   situation   still   seemed   strange, yet the fear in Raju’s voice and the weakness in Anushka’s body slowly began to pierce the wall of anger that surrounded me.

Anushka  tried   to   take   a   step   towards   me,   but   her   legs   immediately   trembled   and   she   almost   slipped   again,   forcing   Raju   to   quickly  grab   her arm to keep her balanced.

”  You see?”   he   said   softly, almost pleadingly, “she can barely stand, bhaiya, I was helping her wash the blood off her arm because she cut herself when she fell.”

It was   only then that I   noticed   the thin red line running along Anushka’s forearm, diluted by the water but still visible on her pale skin.

A   wave   of   shame   slowly   flooded   my   chest   ,   replacing   the   anger   that   had seemed   so   certain   just   moments   before   .

”  How   long   ago   did this happen?” I asked softly, feeling the tension in my shoulders begin to ease as reality slowly replaced my terrible assumptions.

”  About fifteen minutes  perhaps   ,” Raju replied, casting a worried glance at Anushka, “she was dizzy because of the fever, and the floor was wet, so she lost her balance.”

Anushka   looked   at me   with tired eyes that expressed both pain and disappointment, as if she had perceived the suspicion on my face as soon as I opened the door.

”  I   tried   to   call you   ,” she   whispered  , ”  but   my   phone   was   in   the   bedroom   and   I   couldn’t   stand   properly   after   my fall.”

Suddenly, my   throat   went dry with the guilt that overwhelmed me; the terrible thoughts that had filled my mind now seemed cruel and unjust.

Without another word  ,   I   took   a step   forward   and   gently   turned   off the shower tap, the sound of running water finally disappearing and leaving the small bathroom strangely silent.

”  Come on,   let’s get out   of   here   ,   ”   I   said   softly, helping Anushka wrap a towel around her shoulders while Raju carefully supported her from the other side.

Together,   we   slowly   guided   her  to the bedroom, where she sat on the edge of the bed, still breathing heavily but finally safe from the slippery floor.

The   room   was   calmer   than   the   chaotic   thoughts   that had invaded my mind earlier, and I couldn’t stop replaying the moment I burst into the bathroom.

”  I’m   sorry,”   I   murmured   after a long silence   , even though those words seemed insignificant compared to the whirlwind of doubts that assailed me.

Anushka   looked   at me   for several seconds before replying, her eyes scrutinizing my face as if to decide if my apology really had any meaning.

”  You   thought  something   else ,   didn’t   you?”   she   asked   gently, not in an accusatory tone, but with a sadness that hurt much more than anger would have.

I   lowered   my   eyes,   unable   to   lie,   realizing   that   the trust   built   over   three   years   had   almost   collapsed   in   a   single,   terrible   moment   of   imagination.

Raju   moved   awkwardly   near   the   door,   clearly   sensing   that the conversation now belonged to us and not wanting to interfere in something so personal.

”  I   should   go,”   he   said   quietly, “but call me if you need help taking bhabhi to the doctor later.”

I   nodded   gratefully,   suddenly   appreciating   how quickly he had acted when Anushka needed help, instead of hesitating as I had earlier that morning.

After Raju   left  ,   silence   returned to   the apartment   , disturbed only by the distant noise of traffic on Bangalore Street outside our building.

I   went   to   the   kitchen   and  quickly   prepared   the   poha   I   had   planned to make earlier, although now my movements were slower and more deliberate.

Every   few   minutes,   I   glanced   towards   the  bedroom   door ,   remembering   how   fragile Anushka had looked   ,  leaning against the bathroom wall.

When   the   meal   was   ready   ,  I   brought   her   the   hot   plate   and watched her slowly eat a few small bites.

”  You   really   came   home to cook for me?” she asked with a slight smile that seemed to ease the tension that persisted between us.

“  Yes,”  I   replied   honestly   , sitting down   next   to her, “  I   kept   thinking   about   your   fever   during   the   meeting   and   I couldn’t   concentrate   on   anything.”

For   the   first   time   since   the   incident,   her   expression  relaxed   slightly ,   and   the   familiar   warmth   I loved so much gently returned to her eyes.

”  Next   time,”   she   said   softly, “trust me before you trust your fears.”

His   words   were   calm   yet   powerful,   and   they sank  deep   into   my heart like a lesson I will never forget.

Later   that   evening,   I   took   her   to the doctor, who confirmed that her fever and dizziness were probably the cause of her fall in the bathroom.

On   the   way   back,   she   rested   her   head   against   my   shoulder   in   the   car,   exhausted   but   peaceful,   while   the   city   lights   silently passed by the window.

I   then   understood   how fragile trust can be, not because it is weak, but because the human mind is capable of creating terrible stories faster than the truth can explain them.

When   we   arrived back  at our   apartment   ,   the   same   bathroom   door   stood quietly in the hallway, having become an ordinary part of our home.

But   for   me,   it had become   a   reminder   of the moment when doubt had almost destroyed something far more precious than any misunderstanding.

That   night,   while   Anushka   slept   next   to me   , her   hand   gently resting on mine, I promised myself something simple but important.

No matter how   strange   a   situation may seem, I will always choose trust first, because love deserves patience before judgment.
